Best Buy is no longer reputable... ( I think they were in the mid 90's)

Any dealings I've had with them have been slimy. They jack up the prices to ridiculous levels on items like Flash Memory, ripping off less than tech saavy folks who don't know any better.
Their online purchase option with in store pickup is almost criminal with it's
false promises and lack of honesty...

Stay away from Best Buy... They deserve to just fade away like Circuit City.
Apple, You taint your reputation by dealing with this Painted Lady.

    RP:

All you have shown is a deep-seated fear of advertising. And it's been stated that Apple doesn't actually collect this data, so it isn't even being used for iAds.

How exactly, specifically, will this cell phone tower tracking info compromise your personal safety? What exactly is there to fear? There must be something more than targeted advertising, which is at best an annoyance you have to live with anyway.

Some people just don't like to be tracked. If the data fell into to hands of an untoward person, then there might be an issue.

    Who is this "untoward person"?

    What would the "issue" be?

This thread has 4 groups of people:

    1. The op
    2. People who think it is unethical to knowingly steal
    3. People who are defending him, who have likely done a similar thing in the past and therefore feel attacked by 2s criticism
    4. Philosophy students

Can I had another? Law students- don't know about the US but in the UK there is a case for theft here (depends on the OP's state of mind though).

However, I'm thinking this is a

    D
    N
    I
    W

    OP just wants to stir.

What gives anyone the right to put down another person's passion or something they're enthusiastic about? If a friend of mine buys an expensive new car and it didn't suit my own personal taste, I would at least try and be polite about it and not belittle them by saying "what a pile of crap! you spent all that money on that piece of junk?" It's damn rude!

A friend of a friend of mine who once visited my apartment made a snide comment about my iMac. I immediately replied "your t-shirt makes you look fat and ugly", which was met by a very awkward moment of silence. I followed up by saying "don't be rude about my personal taste and I won't be rude about yours."
Needless to say he probably left thinking I'm some nutter who has an unhealthy relationship with my computer, but I'm glad I made the point.

But I do agree that a lot of it is just jealousy. I've known many people who were once very vocal about their hate for Apple and the iPhone, who have since become iPhone owners themselves and now love it.

And perhaps you could remind those who smirk that you've spent 500 on your phone that they too will likely be paying a similar amount for their smartphone over the course of their contract, but with an unlocked iPhone you also have the added benefit of being able to take advantage of much cheaper "sim only" tariffs which you're not locked in to.

How does Gnome 3.0 on Linux compare to the new UI in OSX Lion?

I've been playing around with Gnome 3.0, and it seems like the designers have a similar philosophy about desktop navigation.

You won't be if Apple are increasing the bitrate of audio tracks as part of the update. It's about time they did.

Yeah, I'm sure he'll be delighted if his iPod suddenly has less capacity in exchange for a imperceptible improvement in quality. ;-)

Now, a reduction in bitrate, as an option, might be good...

Equating destruction of physical property to turning off tv sets is a stretch.

Obviously. I was responding to the idea that is was somehow ironic (and funny) that such a low-tech device could disrupt such a high-tech show. There are many other low-tech ways to cause problems for exhibitors. You can't have an open, accessible show floor and protect against everyone's idea of a "prank." Exhibitors have to be able to trust that attendees, especially press credentialed attendees, won't make them look foolish in order to drive traffic to their blogs.

Anyway, I hope you took notice of the real point of my comment:
If pranks like these become more common, companies and trade shows will start to put severe restrictions on who's allowed to attend their events.

    That's nothing to laugh about.

I'm sorry, but with the release of the "true video" iPod "imminent" for months now, I'm just not going to pay any attention whatsoever until I have one in my hands.

Just like the iPhone, PowerBook G5 (and more recently, Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, although that release hasn't been "imminent" often enough yet,) etc.

I'm starting to doubt page 1 rumors just as much as I doubt Page 2 rumors. Unless you (MacRumors, not the 'source' website of the rumor,) have credible, reliable, direct sources, it belongs on Page 2. If you don't have direct sources, (as rumors on other websites would be,) it does not belong on page 1. By your own standards.

Just because it's getting a lot of talk, and Engadget claims their sources are good, is no reason to upgrade it to page 1 status. (Heck, the iWalk got a lot of talk back in the day, and SpyMac claimed their sources were good. That didn't make it true.)

    +1

The quote, "G5 powerbooks on tuesday" comes to mind.

So how much did you nab it for with the misprint if you don't mind telling? I wish that happened to me. I've been looking a for a good m4/3 for a while, but they are all so expensive that I might as get a dslr.

MBAir is too expensive. I was looking for something from Apple to be around the price point I can get a ThinkPad X61 from Lenovo.

It's nice that it fits in an envelope, but that just makes me think it could be too easily damaged traveling in a bag everyday (e.g. too thin).

I like the weight though. It's too bad that Apple couldn't get the MacBooks to be in the weight range.

I can understand why Apple has it in that price range though. You are paying for the smaller Core 2 Duo and the size. They are eyeing the laptops like the Sony's and the Panasonic's. Those are priced in this range too.

Perhaps. You may well be right. But the point was that Apple was the first to seriously use USB and the first to remove floppy drives -- so they get to take the credit for "being innovative", and when everyone else follows suit, whether they were actually being copycats or for whatever other reason, they get credit for "being the leader" and "everyone copies them".

USB was an Intel initiative, not an Apple one. It was all over the tech news if you read PC rags back then, way before the Bondi blue plastic was a pipe dream at Apple.

And adopting someone else's interconnect and removing an internal floppy drive is innovative how ? Especially the removing part...

Yes, Apple are probably going to release full length movies tomorrow morning but there's nothing out there that proves it yet.

But that's nothing new, to either Microsoft or Apple.

I can't imagine how different things would be today if "Cairo" and "Copland" had materialized with all the technologies they promised over 15 years ago.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copland_(operating_system)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo_(operating_system)

Since then, I just wait to see what sticks, and even then, features can get deprecated in subsequent releases. I think Windows Home Server 1's Drive Extender technology was awesome, but they've pulled it from the next major release.

    B

Apple doesn't have much in common with the company that promised that updates. MS might have changed since their Longhorn days, but they are still much closer times wise for MS. We'll see in Vista a screw up for MS after resting on XP's success for so long, or if 7 was a fluke and MS has lost it.

I'm seeing 8 as a good OS X, but not the upgrade 7 was. Which is in part due to the mess that was Vista and the age of XP at the time of 7's launch.

About 2 months ago I paid an early termination fee and gave up my iPhone because of the dropped calls. I have a Blackberry on Verizon, and consume about 800 minutes a month (peak times, not nights and weekends) and close to 200MB of bandwidth.

I have not had a single dropped call. I can also finally browse the web without Safari crashing all the time.

I would not call looking at the web on a blackberry surfing. It is more like wading in a kiddie pool.

Why would Apple logically develop a piece of software that uses the graphics card when I have four processors - many others have two - begging to be worked. I guess I never understood the logic of using Core Image to power this thing.

... because CoreImage allows problems to be described in a way that scales not only across GPU pixel pipeliness, but also across CPUs? This is good bleeding-edge design that will take some time to tweak and tune, but sets the stage for amazing gains over time.

Apple has done their homework on this one - every future release of OS X will do a better job of balancing resources to make Aperture scream.

Everyone is harping on the MacBook Air because of it's lack of ports or an optical drive, but at the end of the day people are still going to want to buy it. It's a nice product.

I think its very reasonably priced by the way - compare that to other machines in the class.
